Is buying land and holding it still a good strategy?

My grandfather always said “buy land, they’re not making any more of it.” But with changing market dynamics and increasing holding costs (taxes, security), is this still a good investment strategy?

What’s the typical annual appreciation for land in developing areas around Dhaka?
